WOMEN BUILD projects provide an environment in which women can feel comfortable learning the skills they might not otherwise have the opportunity to learn. With your help and the help of our national partner Lowe’s in Southern Pines, we can make a dream come true for the Lopez Family. You will get the joy and experience of being a part of actually building this 5-bedroom home in Midway Gardens, Aberdeen. Our “Kick-Off build day is Saturday, Sept 8 to raise walls. Fundraising begins today so call us for details and how you can help. 910-295-1934 or click on the WOMEN BUILD image below to register.

The Habitat for Humanity’s Spring Gala, “Raising the Roof for Patsy’s House”, was held at the Country Club of North Carolina on Saturday, April 14. The theme of this year’s gala was a tribute to the late Patsy Bonsal to acknowledge her efforts for more than 20 years of raising funds to build almost 200 Habitat for Humanity Homes. Silent and live auctions, as well as dancing to the music of The Vision Band, were features of the event, which was chaired by Alice Robbins, with co-chairs Mimi Beatty, Jackie Garris and Donna Verrilli. Proceeds cleared $131,000 which will be enough to build 2 homes for those who currently live in substandard housing, often in tough neighborhoods. Patsy would be pleased!

The recipient and new homeowner of “Patsy’s House”, Keosha Green wrote the following letter to the Gala Committee.

May 1, 2012

Dear Habitat Family

This has been a long, difficult journey for me and my kids. We have been waiting for our own family’s home for a long time. We have been through a lot. Your generous gifts at Habitat’s gala raised more than $131,000—enough to build my home and one other family’s home. Thank you for building “Patsy’s House” for my family.

I shed tears today knowing I was writing a thank you to you. I couldn’t move into my own home without you. I kept reading emails and stories about the gala but never knew it was for me and another family.

I told you it had been hard. My daughter and I have even slept in a car. My family split up with the boys staying with other family. Their grades have slipped, they are not used to being without me, and their behavior at school has changed. They miss me, and I can’t tell you how much I miss them.

We will be in our own home soon—everyone together again. I will be able to walk down the hall and see all of my children as they sleep. I thank you for doing this for me and my kids and another family. It is such a blessing. This is just the beginning for us.

I would love to meet you in person, either on the work site or at my dedication. I ask God to bless you as you have blessed me. I hope to see you soon so that we can rejoice together.

Keosha Green and Michael, Shiquille, Marquise, Makiya

On Saturday, Feb. 25, the Pinehurst Police Dept. Team Build worked at the165 Gaines Street home of the Harris Family. Police Chief Earl Phipps and his wife, Rhonda, treated the 14 officers and Habitat staff to an Eastern BBQ lunch specially prepared by the Chief. Tracey Harris and her 19-year-old son, Shyron, told the team their Habitat story during the morning announcements and prayer. Since 1988, this three-bedroom home is only the second home built by HFH in the Pinehurst area. The Police Team Build raised exterior and interior walls and completed the front porch decking during their workday. On March 10, several of the officers returned to help with Saturday construction.
